Ideas for holidays, weekends and trips in Runcorn and its surroundings
Runcorn sits in a beautiful spot on the banks of the River Mersey, and there is much to do and see in the town and nearby Liverpool. Halton Castle is one of Runcorn's Runcorn's most well-known landmarks, and is in the centre of town so is very easy to get to. Only the ruins remain but the views from atop the hill are lovely, so this spot is worth a visit. Norton Priory, also in the town centre, is a museum, and used to be an abbey and country house. On your visit, you will see the remains of the priory and the abbey as well as the country house, and in the on-site museum are artefacts which have been found from excavations on the site, so you'll be able to learn about the local history during your stay. The attractive walled gardens contain an orchard and a national collection of 20 different quince trees, which certainly isn't something you see every day! Wigg Island is a nature reserve which is only 2km from the hotel, and is worth a visit on a sunny afternoon. A trip over to Liverpool is a must during your stay in Runcorn. Just 24km across the River Mersey is the sparkling city that was the 2008 European City of Culture. Home to The Beatles, Liverpool and Everton football clubs, the Tate Liverpool as well as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, there's sure to be something here for everyone to discover and enjoy. The Campanile Runcorn hotel is the perfect place to stay while exploring this glittering corner of the UK.
